Metro Transit employees reach contract deal
With 83 percent support, Metro Transit union employees overwhelmingly approved a new two-year contract Monday evening.
After eight months of negotiation with the Metropolitan Council, officials were able to agree on a new contract that will run through 2010.
The new Met Council contract includes a 2.25 percent raise this year and a two percent raise in 2009. It also gives overnight bus drivers an additional 50 cents per hour.
The new contract is effective immediately.
With soaring gas prices, Metro Transit is recording its highest ridership in 25 years. The fear of the contract being opposed brought back memories of the worker strike of 2004, when transit was at a standstill for six weeks.
